Area roundup for county schools

Heavener’s girls and Spiro’s boys moved one step closer to the state tournament while Poteau’s boys and Wister’s boys saw their seasons end in losers’ bracket play on Thursday.

The Lady Wolves jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 48-37 win over Vian while Spiro stayed alive with a 55-49 win, Poteau lost the rubber match to Stilwell, 59-53, and Wister fell to Davis, 58-48.

Heavener jumped out to a 9-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and eventually led 24-12 at halftime in the win over Vian.

Because of the margin, Heavener was able to rest its starters for a good portion of the game in preparation of Friday’s 1:30 game against Keys, which defeated Hugo.

“We were able to play everybody,” said Heavener coach Jody Fincher. “It was another great defensive night. There were stretches where we got multiple starters on the bench for three or four minutes at a time.”

Taylor Collins led Heavener, now 23-3, with 20 points while Skylar Cooper had 14. The Lady Wolves face Keys on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Keys beat Hugo on Thursday afternoon.

Spiro trailed most of the game, most by double digits before rallying for the victory.

The Bulldogs trailed by 16 points in the second quarter and were behind by double figures late in the third quarter.

Dakota Watson gave Spiro a lead early in the fourth quarter and the teams traded leads until Shane Thompson got an offensive rebound and hit a free throw to give the Bulldogs the lead for good.

Elliott Hawkins paced Spiro with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Harold Solomon added 12 points for the Bulldogs. Jordan Burrell led Valliant with 19 points.

Spiro plays Sequoyah Tahlequah tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Muskogee.

Poteau led Stilwell going into the fourth quarter but the Indians controlled the final minutes of the game to down the Pirates. The two teams split their two regular season games this season, each winning on their home court.

Josh Ross led Poteau with 29 points, including 18 in the first half as the Pirates had a 33-26 lead at halftime.

Poteau ends its season with a 18-9 record while Stilwell advances to Friday’s game, also with a 18-9 record.

Wister led over Davis, 26-23, before falling short in the second half. David bounced back to lead 38-33 after the third and went on to the win.
