Heavener
girls, Poteau boys win
By CRAIG HALL
HEAVENER—Heavener’s
girls and Poteau’s boys were expected to win in Monday’s games here.
They did, but it was far from easy.
The Lady Wolves won their 12th-straight game, 48-38, while Poteau’s
boys dialed up the long-distance baskets to pull away late, 68-56.

In the first
game, Poteau trailed by only four late in the third quarter before Heavener
finally started pulling away.
Shaylee Manley scored for Heavener and one free throw by Taylor Collins gave
Heavener a 35-28 lead early in the third quarter. Poteau’s Jodi Meier hit a
basket to snap the skid before Collins’ steal and layup gave Heavener another
seven-point lead.
Both teams traded baskets before Heavener went on a 6-0 run to finally break
away. Kim Benson started the run with a basket before Collins scored a basket
and added two free throws to up the Lady Wolves’ lead to 46-34.
Neither team shot the ball that well, especially in the first quarter. Poteau
kept the game close by playing good defense and handling Heavener’s press.
Collins and Manley were the difference for Heavener. Collins was the leading
scorer for both teams with 18 points while Manley added 15. Courtney Allison led
the Lady Pirates with 13 points while Meier added 10.
The second game was even closer. After being tied at halftime, Poteau only led
by three early in the fourth quarter after a three-point shot by Britt Brown
when the Wolves tied the score on a three-point basket by Austin Mead.
Poteau took over after Mead’s basket. Wilson Klutts hit another three for the
Pirates and Shawn Bradley answered for the Wolves.
Josh Ross hit two free throws for the Pirates and Brown and Ross each hit a
three to put Poteau ahead 62-56.
Koda Glover hit a three for Heavener to cut the margin to 62-56 but Ross was
perfect on four free throws to put the game away.
Ross, who hit a career-high 36 points in Friday’s win over Stilwell, once again
led the Pirates, now 13-5, with 23 points while Brown had 17 and Klutts 10.
Mead led the Wolves with 18 points. Glover added 17 and Joey Bottoms tossed in
10.
It was the third win of the season for Poteau over Heavener. The two
regular-season games were close although the Pirates win in a blowout in the
third-place game of the county tournament.
Heavener is scheduled to play at Pocola on Tuesday and Poteau is slated to play
at Muldrow, although the heavy snow could postpone both games.
