Pocola
boys, Heavener girls win
By CRAIG HALL
HEAVENER—Patrick
Dixon and the Pocola boys were too strong while Heavener’s girls carried on
their winning ways here Tuesday night.
Pocola’s boys led most of the game and used a big run over the first part of the
third quarter to down Heavener, 65-51, while the Lady Wolves suffered no ill
effects of winning the county tournament on Saturday in a 76-54 victory over the
Lady Indians.

Heavener managed to stay
close to Pocola in the first half, trailing only 30-26, but the Indians went on
an 11-0 run to start the second half as the Wolves were held scoreless for 5:11.
By the time Heavener’s Austin Mead hit two free throws to end the drought,
Pocola had a 15-point lead.
The Wolves fought back and used their own 11-0 run but Pocola answered with a
10-0 run to put the game away.
Dixon and Austin Parker were too much for Heavener on both ends. Dixon scored a
game-high 24 points while Parker added 19. Dixon also held Mead in check for
most of the second half as the Wolves continued to struggle with Brandon
Kirkland out with a broken collarbone.
Kirkland had surgery this morning and had a plate and six screws inserted on the
collarbone he broke in the game against Talihina Friday night.
Koda Glover paced Heavener with 16 points while Mead added 13.
In the first game of the night, Heavener coach Jody Fincher was not pleased with
the Lady Wolves’ defense but had no complaints with the offense as they placed
four starters in double figures and the fifth, Shaylee Manley, finished with
eight.
Heavener jumped ahead 20-7 in the first quarter. Pocola kept the pressure on and
never let the Lady Wolves blow the game open until late.
Skylar Cooper had one of her best games of the year in leading Heavener in
scoring with 21 points. Taylor Collins and Meagan Bottoms, who had five
three-point goals, each scored 15 and Kim Benson added 10.
Taylor Martindale led Pocola with 18 points while Amber Conrad and Jadah Wilson
added 13.
Heavener will be back in action Thursday when it hosts Spiro while Pocola visits
Howe, also on Thursday.
