Seniors
shine in all-star game
By CRAIG HALL
POTEAU—Most
of LeFlore County’s best seniors donned their old uniforms one last time Monday
in all-star games here at Carl Albert State College.
It was a Civil War of sorts, without the animosity for the most part, although
players from both teams wanted to win, naturally.

But no matter the outcome,
all the players were winners and the MVPs were awarded scholarships from the
LeFlore County Coaches, which put the event on.
The play was a little rusty at times, aside from the North boys’ performance in
the first half, as could be expected as most of the players have not touched a
basketball since their seasons ended back in March.
The South girls had to rally late to overcome a game effort by the North and
take a 54-52 win. The North boys jumped out to a 40-9 lead early as most
everything they threw up went in en route to a 80-57 win.

In the girls’ game, the
Journal’s Player of the Year, Taylor Collins, scored a game-high 20 points as
the South rallied late behind her and Randa Grant of Howe to pull off the win.
Collins tied the score at 51 with 1:31 left and Grant’s two free throws gave the
South the lead with 1:11 left.
Kacie Orzol of Bokoshe hit one free throw with 14 seconds left to pull her team
within one but Collins hit one free throw with 10 seconds left and a last-second
shot by the North missed, giving the South team the 54-52 win.
The North was hot early in building up a double-digit lead as MVP Amber Conroad
of Pocola hit from outside and the North got easy shots by pushing the ball down
the court.
After the South took the lead late in the third quarter, Kayli Francis of Panama
hit back-to-back threes to give the North a 44-39 lead going into the final
quarter.
The South started pressing and the North turned the ball over enough to get back
in the game and eventually grab the lead and the win.
While the first game went down to the wire, the second game belonged to the
North squad as they were on fire in the first half while the South struggled to
get anything going.
Patrick Dixon of Pocola and Justin Smith of Panama were the main shooters in the
first half as Dixon scored 14 and Smith had 11. Smith, who was the North MVP,
continued his hot shooting in the second half, eventually scoring a game-high 23
points.
Austin Parker of Pocola also had a good game, finishing with 13 points. South
MVP Britt Brown and Marcus Sullivan of Talihina each scored 11 points to lead
their team.
Sullivan had contributed the highlight on the night, grabbing a rebound and
stuffing the ball through the basket in the same motion.
