Wolves blow out Buffalo Valley

By CRAIG HALL
HEAVENER—At times, Heavener coach Ray Glover was not pleased with the Wolves’ intensity in their game with Buffalo Valley here Monday afternoon.

The Wolves jumped out to a big lead early, allowed Buffalo Valley back into the game, then rallied late to run-rule the visitors, 12-4.

Heavener's Austin Mead slams a hit during the Wolves' 12-4 win over Buffalo Valley Monday afternoon.

It looked like a blow out early as Heavener led 4-0 after the first inning and 7-0 after two innings. That was when Buffalo Valley used a three-run homer in a four-run inning to close the gap to 7-4.

After being blanked in the fourth, Glover let his team know he wasn’t exactly pleased with how hard they were playing.

The message was delivered and his players responded, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth and adding a run in the sixth and one more in the sixth to finish the game early because of the run rule.

Heavener’s Nick Wann went the distance for the Wolves, striking out five and only allowing three hits. His only big mistake was hanging a pitch in the third inning that was deposited over the left-field wall. Other than that pitch, Wann was effective in the win that improved Heavener to 8-2 overall.

Kyle Whiteis scored the clinching run in the bottom of the sixth, pinch running for Koby Cross, who led off the inning with a hit.

Brandon Kirkland had earlier given the Wolves an early lead with a single to knock in Austin Mead and Koda Glover in the bottom of the first.

The Wolves added five more in the bottom of the second. Freshman Evan Fincher led off with a bunt for a hit and scored on a single by Mead, who scored on a bunt single by Kirkland with two outs. Glover and Wann scored thanks to Wann, who helped his own cause with a double. Wann scored the final run in the inning on a double by Andrew Munoz.

Heavener’s three run-fourth came as Cross knocked in two runs and Fincher scored again on a hit by Mead.

Glover slammed a triple to lead off the fifth and pinch-runner Levi Phillips scored on a wild pitch.

Heavener will be back in action Tuesday at Hartshorne before hosting Spiro Thursday.
